Six months since the launch of Screenwyse and time for a review of the success of offering freelance web design and local SEO services to businesses and organisations in Devon and the South West.

Following the sudden, unexpected departure from the Exeter office of what was once a well respected digital marketing agency I continued to dabble with the various online moonlighting activities that supplemented my salaried income – thereby keeping up with industry news and keeping up to date with the ever changing world of organic search marketing. Freedom from the constraints and compartmentalisation that the agency enforced means that I have been able to explore and develop activities and techniques to truly improve the online performance businesses and organisation by focusing on locally targeted search engine optimisation (SEO) and where necessary upgrading their websites.

Be seen on all screens

Whilst keeping a close eye on developments in search marketing and online usage it became apparent that the meteoric rise of mobile usage – on smart phones and tablets – could not be ignored.  A run through a dozen or so websites of local businesses in and around Dartmoor revealed a woeful failure for them to be mobile friendly. That was the catalyst for the idea to offer my services to create responsive website designs for local businesses with the added value of including local SEO for Devon to give better online exposure to locals and visitors to the region looking for products and services near them.

Responsive Website Designs

One website that can be viewed properly on all screens – no sideways scrolling and pinching screens to enlarge sections on smart phones – that is achieved by using responsive web designs. Thanks to the advancement of WordPress themes this was something that could be fulfilled whilst still employing the core skills and knowledge gained from many years creating and promoting WordPress websites and blogs.

Early Days

The first project came along out of the blue when the ever so helpful financial advisor Q of QHFS who knew I worked with things internet asked if I could build a website to showcase his latest project.  Having completed the refurbishment of a Devon longhouse in Dartmoor National Park he was eager to launch the property as a luxury holiday rental – Springfield Cottage – a traditional granite cottage with all mod cons. There began, as they say in the digital marketing industry, the journey.

Self employment

It is thanks to the sage advice that Q gave – to decided what I wanted to do and do it – that the journey into becoming a self employed online optimisation consultant began.  He reminded me that when I first landed a job with Netrank in Exeter back in 2006 that I was “pleased as punch” because it involved getting paid for what I enjoyed doing – developing online presence, building websites and getting them to perform in search results.

Advertise Locally

So here we are, six months since the advert for Screenwyse was placed in the Bovey Tracey Cottage Magazine – with the STILL flawed listing on the website – a broken link is hardly helpful for a web design and SEO  business – roll eyes. In that time several new websites have been completed all with ongoing support and continuing focus on local SEO.  Hopefully word of mouth, and personal recommendations will bring more and more interesting projects.
